Rammed Earth - day 1
Fantastic day to be outside building earth walls, perfect sunshine!
We learned a lot, but as a quick summary, we had a talk on different techniques which exist, the importance of form works, and the wide use of this construction type all over the planet.

It is definitely a global as well as extremely ancient technology.
As we discovered from building these walls ourselves, there are several obvious reasons why rammed earth is a sustainable material: it's from right under our feet pretty much anywhere we are on the planet, it needs very little water, it's incredibly easy to build (yet very strong) and requires minimal training and knowledge so anyone can learn. It was impressive to see that after just one day we gained practically all the knowledge necessary to build a building envelop. I particularly liked learning how to analyse the content of a handful amount of earth (the clay content being crucial for a good bond), we used the smell, the touch, the look and the sound that earth makes... Fantastic.
ok that's it for a 'summary', looking forward to Day 2!! marion
